What Is Fatefield?

What is Fatefield?

While Fatefield can be played in various ways, Fatefield is mainly a tabletop physical board game with a true battle-royale experience where the battlefield shrinks to force the players to take on each other until only 1 player or team survives to win the game.

What makes it fun?

Uncertainty is mostly what makes Fatefield fun. At the start of the game, players will never know what guns and items they get to play with and whether or not they will be able to find their favorite gun that will make them win the game. The dice mechanics added to movement, gun effects and character skills give an extra fun factor that makes people shout and jump in excitement!

Who is this for?

While Fatefield can be a deep high-level gameplay that could make hardcore players drown in theorycrafting, the game is actually designed for non-board gamers or people that are new to board gaming. A 1v1 game can last only 15-20 minutes, about 40 minutes for a 4-player game, and even less once players know the game.

Is it easy to play?

While other board games have tons of pages to read to learn how to play, Fatefield has only a 2-page back-to-back manual. The mechanics don't involve unknown symbols or hard-to-digest keywords that players have to memorize.

What is Fatefield's goal?

Fatefield is currently in beta. The game works as intended and new players enjoy it, though some card descriptions, character balance, and overall mechanics still need tweaking. Right now the goal is to get more players and see which parts need improvement — after that, we're going global (currently Fatefield is only available in PH).

Game update / expansion

Currently in the works are the 'Loadout Cards' — additional cards players can add to customize the abilities and build of their favorite characters, limited by loadout points. At this point Fatefield can also play like a TCG, without alienating players who enjoy it as-is.

How Fatefield Started

TLDR: Free Fire and Black Survival were the video games that inspired a multimedia artist / esports executive to make Fatefield.

Gin Liao was a multimedia artist and esports executive in the video gaming industry (Garena Philippines), which closed down back in 2018 as battle-royale games like Fortnite, PUBG and Free Fire were taking off. Around that time, a friend kept telling Gin about hanging out at a board game cafe — and one of Gin's dreams was to publish his own game, though the industry usually expects a "coder" on the team.

As the video game office was winding down, Gin started figuring out how a battle-royale genre with a shrinking battlefield could work as a tabletop board game — scheming everything out in Google Sheets and Photoshop.

TLDR: Gin tested the game with his buddy and both their exes using cut-out bond paper, and it worked — it was fun. Fatefield then slept in Google Sheets until 2021.
